Autumn School 2024 | "O que andamos para aqui chegar": Perspectives and practices on musical education/training in higher education
From November 21 to 23, 2024, the INET-md branch at the Escola Superior de Educação do Politécnico do Porto hosted the 2024 Autumn School, themed "O que andamos para aqui chegar": Perspectives and Practices on Musical Education/Training in Higher Education. The event brought together renowned specialists, researchers, and music and performing arts professionals, creating a space for academic reflection, pedagogical practice, and interdisciplinary dialogue.
Among the keynote speakers, Augusto Santos Silva, former President of the Portuguese Parliament, delivered the lecture "A Revolução dos Cravos e a mudança cultural em Portugal: um roteiro para uma investigação na área da música". His presentation explored the cultural impacts of the 1974 Revolution and proposed new research approaches within the field of music. Other notable speakers included An De Bisschop from Ghent University and Sanja Tasic, President of the General Council of the International Drama/Theatre in Education Association and the World Alliance for Arts Education. They led talks on the relationship between music, theater, and community education, aligning with the INET-md CIPEM research line, Education, Music, and Theater in the Community.
The program featured twelve invited presentations by faculty members from various university and polytechnic music institutions across Portugal. Two discussants, Manuela Encarnação from the Associação Portuguesa de Educação Musical and Rui Ferreira from INET-md, critically analyzed these presentations.
A highlight of the event was the four practical classes led by international experts:
-
Anna Füri (Liszt Academy Kodály Institute) explored strategies for musical listening and reading;
-
Alberto Odone (Conservatorio “G. Verdi” di Milano) addressed aural training based on the stylistic schemata of the Galant style;
-
An De Bisschop conducted a session on participatory musical practices;
-
Marcos Cavaleiro (Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo, Politécnico do Porto) focused on rhythm studies.
