Coordination

The project consists of four interrelated components:

1. Multidisciplinary research on music and dance in Portugal and the Lusophone world from the perspectives of ethnomusicology, historical musicology, cultural studies, popular music studies, ethnocoreology, education, music analysis and composition, and performance studies.
2. Music and dance performance and creation informed by artistic and scientific research
3. Audiovisual archiving.
4. Community work.

General objectives

Research

To consolidate and expand interdisciplinary research on central issues in music and dance using current theoretical perspectives and methods from the fields of ethnomusicology, historical musicology, cultural studies, popular music studies, ethnocoreology, music education, music theory, and performance studies.
To carry out field and archival research on the music and dance heritage and contemporary processes in Portugal, and other Lusophone countries focusing on a wide range of music and dance domains, including traditional, popular, and art music and dance, jazz, pop-rock, as well as the music and other modes of expressive behavior of immigrant communities.
To research all aspects of musical development, music education and community, music in the European space of Higher Education, music teacher training and the place of music beyond school.
To understand the processes involved in the teaching and learning of performance skills
To map out the performance process from a multidisciplinary perspective.
To investigate the diverse listener's constructions of musical meaning
To stimulate research in emerging research areas such as 'music and art in conflict transformation', acoustic ecology, music and health, etc.

Creation

To stimulate music and dance creation in close conjunction with research.
To develop new technological tools for music and dance creation, and analysis.

Advanced Training

To offer advanced training and research experience on the doctoral and postdoctoral levels in the fields that constitute INET-md's research groups: ethnomusicology, popular music studies, cultural and historical studies, performance studies, ethnochoreology, music education, music creation.
To increase the number of Ph.Ds defended under the supervision of INET-md researchers
Archiving
To develop audiovisual archiving and related research, using cutting edge technologies, digitizing techniques and archiving procedures, focusing especially on Portuguese and other Lusophone music and dance patrimonies.
To repatriate recording collections and develop collaborative research with the communities in which the recordings were initially made

Internationalization

To increase the internationalization of INET-md by promoting the mobility of researchers and graduate students and their participation in European and international research networks.
To increase strategic partnerships with similar centers with an international profile.
To increase the number of projects financed by European and international institutions
To attract international students and researchers

Dissemination of Research Results

To increase the Institute's international publications of research results and creative work in refereed journals, and prestigious monographic and audiovisual series.
To construct an online multimedia databank on music and dance in Portugal and other Lusophone countries based on the documentation and research produced as a result of

INET-md's projects

To support the participation of the unit's members in scientific meetings and artistic events and in publishing the results of their research
To promote scientific debate between Portuguese and international scholars by consolidating the Music in Context colloquium series organized jointly with CESEM (Centro de Estudos de Sociologia e Estética Musical) and organizing and participating in international conferences and seminars and online discussion forums.
To consolidate the online Portuguese Musicological Journal in collaboration with CESEM and SPIM (Sociedade Portuguesa de Investigação em Música)

Outreach

To disseminate the outcome of research and creation to the general public through publications intended for the general readership, museum expositions, the media (radio, television, internet), and programs targeted for children and young people.
To contribute to public culture by collaborating with government agencies, museums, foundations, and other institutions in elaborating and implementing cultural policies and programs, and in evaluating their impact.
To provide training for non-academic audiences in the areas of expertise of the Institute's research through workshops, extension courses, summer courses, etc.

Community Work

To develop collaborative research with communities by studying, promoting, documenting and archiving their expressive culture and by training young community residents in music research

A new Research Forum (INET-md's Forums) is planned and will involve all INET-md branches. It will be organized and hosted by one of INET-md's branches each semester. The topics selected are transversal to the interests of unit. The following Research Forums are planned for the next two years:

Improvization in Music and Dance (INET-md/FMH)
Education and Community (INET-md/IPP)
Practice-based Research (INET-md/UA)
Lusofonia and Expressive Culture (INET-md/FCSH)
20th Symposium of the ICTM Study Group on Historical Sources of Traditional Music (INET-md/UA)

One of the conditions for participation in the RF is the publication of a research paper in a refereed journal or edited volume.
