Biography
Jorge Alexandre Costa has fulfilled his music studies at the Music Conservatory of Porto (1988), in the College of Music and Performing Arts of the Porto Polytechnic (1990) and the Communication and Art Department of University of Aveiro (1995). In 2000 he finished a master’s in educational sciences at the Institute of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Minho (Portugal) with the dissertation: "The reform of music teaching in the context of liberal reforms: from the Conservatory of Dramatic Art in 1836 to the Royal Conservatory of Lisbon in 1841". In 2009 he has concluded a PhD in Sociology of Education at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of University of Porto (Portugal) with the thesis: "The public space as a habitus of education and culture: the public theaters of the city of Porto, as stages of lyrical performance, in the second half of the 19th century (1865-1891)". He was vice-president of the Executive Direction of the College of Education of Porto Polytechnic University, between 2007 and 2008, Pro President of Culture of Porto Polytechnic University, from 2018 to 2022, and a member of the Scientific Committee of the College of Education of Porto Polytechnic University, from 2021 to 2023. He is a founding member of CIPEM (Research Centre for Psychology of Music and Music Education) and part of the investigation team of several research projects sponsored by FCT (Foundation for Science and Technology from the Portuguese Ministry of Education). His main areas of research interest are innovation in music education, music teacher education, aural training, sociology of culture, cultural studies, and social history of music. He is the author and co-author of several projects and publications aiming at the divulgation of Portuguese composer's works. Currently, he is lecturer of music theory and aural training and of music teaching in the Music and Drama Department of the College of Education of Porto Polytechnic University, classes he has taught since 1997, coordinator of the master's degree in music education, from 2013, and coordinator of the research center CIPEM, from 2023. He collaborates with the Culture Department of Matosinhos municipality in music programming since 2010. He obtained the aggregation title in Artistic Education at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto in 2023.
