INET-md is the first research unit in Portugal focusing on music and dance. It was founded in 1995 by Salwa El-Shawan Castelo-Branco with the goal of carrying out ethnomusicological research. Subsequently, the Institute expanded the scope of its research to include cultural and historical studies in music and dance, performance and creation through the following new research groups:
In 2003, the Institute also created branches in FMH-UL and DeCA-UA and in 2013, it founded a new branch and research group on Education and Music in the Community at the ESE-IPP in Oporto.
