The Faculty for Human Kinetics (FMH), University of Lisbon, formaly the National Institute for Physical Education, was founded in 1940. The Faculty adopted its present name in 1989, and chose as its main objectives the promotion of human development, and the study of the body and its manifestations within the context of the interaction between biological processes and socio-cultural values. Following this broad approach, FMH promotes and relates theoretical and practical body and movement perspectives. Graduate and post-graduate studies and research (MA, PhD and post-doctoral programmes) are articulated with the European educational system and in collaboration with other international institutions. Currently FMH is open to a wider range of study areas of interest to different sectors of society – including the Arts – with which it cooperates in a lively and fruitful way. Establishing selected cooperative relationships and seeking strategic partners is one of the main distinguishing features of the diversity and quality of the cooperation protocols and relationships that FMH has forged over the years.
