Biography

Hugo Castro is an integrated researcher at the Institute of Ethnomusicology, Center for Studies in Music and Dance (INET-md) at NOVA FCSH. He has a degree in Anthropology from the University of Coimbra (2006) and completed his master's degree (2012) and a PhD (2022) in Ethnomusicology, at NOVA FCSH, having defended a doctoral dissertation with the title “A cantiga só é arma quando a luta acompanhar: canção e política na Revolução dos Cravos (1974-1976)” (FCT Doctoral Program “Music as Culture and Cognition”, grant reference PD/BD/114394/2016). He has been doing research on several domains of popular music in Portugal, in particular, on the relationship between music and politics, protest song practices, music industries and music and heritage. From 2011 to 2014 he was part of the research team of the project “An anthropological study of the Festas Nicolinas in Guimarães” (CRIA-Câmara Municipal de Guimarães), participating in documental research and fieldwork, being also responsible for writing an ethnomusicological study on practices of sound in festival contexts. From 2019 to 2021 he was a member of the research team and fellow of the project "ORFEU (1956-1983): The Politics and aesthetics of popular music production and consumption in modern Portugal", under the coordination of Salwa Castelo-Branco, financed by FCT (ref. PTDC/ART-OUT/32320/2017). He is a member of the research team of the ongoing project "'We must warn everyone': Music and Portuguese exile in France during the Estado Novo regime (1933-1974)", coordinated by Manuel Deniz Silva, financed by the FCT (refª 2022.05129.PTDC). He is currently curator of the estate of José Mário Branco deposited at the Centro de Estudos e Documentação José Mário Branco - Música e Liberdade at NOVA FCSH. He represents INET-md on the executive committee of the Observatory of Protest Song and he is a member of the board of the Associação Lopes-Graça and of the board of the Associação José Afonso.
