Biography
Iñigo Sánchez Fuarros received his PhD in anthropology from the University of Barcelona (Spain). He works as a Ramón y Cajal senior researcher at the Institute of Heritage Sciences (Incipit), Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), in Santiago de Compostela. From 2019 to 2020, he was a research fellow at the Institute for Ethnomusicology (INET-md) at the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, and between 2011 and 2019 he worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution. In 2017 he was part of the research team for the AHRC project Understanding the Role of Sound and Music in Conflict Transformation: The Mozambique Case Study developed at the Sonic Arts Research Centre (SARC) at Queen's University Belfast. He is currently Principal Investigator of the three-year research project (2018-2021) Sounds of Tourism funded by the Portuguese Research Council (FCT) through a SR&TD Project Grant (PTDC/ART-PER/32417/2017).
His research interests focus on the study of music as a social and cultural phenomenon in three interdisciplinary domains: the relationship between music, identity and migration; the field of sound studies, and the study of music in urban settings. He is the author of the monograph Cubaneando en Barcelona. Música, migración y experiencia urbana (CSIC, 2012) and his research has been published in different academic journals (TRANS-Revista Transcultural de Música, Western Folklore, Revista d'Etnologia de Catalunya, MUSICultures) and edited books, among others Fiesta y ciudad: pluriculturalidad e integración (CSIC, 2008), Made in Spain. Studies in Popular Music (Routledge, 2013), Musical Performance and the Changing City (Routledge, 2013), Towards an Anthropology of Ambient Sound (Routledge, 2017), Exploring Nightlife: Space, Society and Governance (Rowman & Littlefield, 2018).
He is the editor of TRANS-Transcultural Music Review and member of the editorial board of Cadernos de Arte e Antropologia (Brazil) and Archiv für Textmusikforschung (Germany).
