Doctoral ProjectTitleMusic on the verge: Experimental music festivals and cultural decentralizationAdvisorAbstractBased on the concept of festivals as spaces for artistic dynamization and phenomenological analysis, these events assert themselves both as stimuli for community interaction and as vehicles for revoking current social and musical hierarchies. Thus, this ethnography aims to explore the decentralization of experimental and improvised music in Portugal, taking as examples the festivals OUT.FEST-Festival de Música Exploratória do Barreiro, Semibreve and Space Festival. These events are spaces that challenge the canonical musical conceptions that govern social and artistic expression. Consequently, the main aim of this project is to discuss the role of festivals as instruments of social and cultural transformation, essential for intercultural mediation. From this perspective, I will investigate whether notions such as artistic innovation and the decentralization of musical practices can foster the creation of spaces that encourage accountability and social cohesion. Using a qualitative methodological framework, with an emphasis on the ethnographic method, I will analyse whether the events featured in this ethnography can contribute to musical and artistic decentralization in the places that host them. To this end, this study focuses on the social, economic and artistic impact of festivals on local communities. As a result, this ethnography aims to support cultural decentralization in Portugal, encouraging intercultural dialogue and promoting the development of heterogeneous forms of artistic and cultural expression.KeywordsSocial cohesion, social responsibility, festivals, cultural decentralization, experimental music.Research Group: Ethnomusicology and Popular Music Studies
