Biography
Ana Raquel initiated her musical studies in piano at the Conservatory – Madeira Arts Professional School. In 2019 she graduated in Musicology by the NOVA University of Lisbon – School of Social Sciences and Humanities and in 2021 she post-graduated in Data Analysis in the Social Sciences by the ISCTE - University Institute of Lisbon – School of Sociology and Public Policy. In both cases she was distinguished as the best student with a final grade of 18/20. At the moment she is a PhD student in Ethnomusicology at the former superior institution (Alma Mater), the University of Granada and the University of Bologna. Ana Raquel’s PhD is being financed by FCT, the Portuguese national funding agency for science, research and technology.

Towards a Social Cohesion through Music: Identity, Memory, Heritage and Tourism in the UNESCO Creative Cities of Idanha-a-Nova, Seville and Bologna
Abstract:
The research project focuses on music as a social phenomenon with the capacity to mobilise and aggregate individuals and, ultimately, with the potential to foster social cohesion. The research aims at studying how music in articulation with identity, memory, heritage and tourism contributes to the reinforcement- or not- of citizen well-being and healthy practices of social bonding. The research is taking place in three UNESCO Creative Cities of Music: Idanha-a-Nova, Seville and Bologna, and has narrowed its attention to the music symbols of folk music, flamenco and art music, respectively. Two empirical components will be considered: cultural and recreational associations- to study how individuals perceive and experience the four socio-musical dimensions- and cultural policymakers- to study how the dimensions are being operationalised. The research expects to broaden the scientific knowledge of the thematic and contribute to the political reflexion on musical culture as a lever to sustainable development.
