Biography
Pedro Roxo holds a PhD in Musical Sciences (Ethnomusicology) and a BA in History (variant of History of Art) from the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa. In this institution he is an integrated researcher at the Institute of Ethnomusicology (INET-MD) and has been invited assistant professor on graduate and postgraduate courses focusing on Ethnomusicology, Jazz, Popular Music Studies and on the Analysis of Orally Transmitted Musical Practices. His dissertation focuses on the expressive culture of the Indian Hindu-Gujarati Diaspora in Mozambique, Portugal and England, articulating issues of Identity, Emotion and Embodiment in the colonial and postcolonial periods. His research in the last years has also been focused on the reception of Jazz in Colonial Portugal - a subject on which he has several published and forthcoming articles in Portugal and abroad. He is one of the main responsible for the research project Jazz in Portugal: The Legacies of Luís Villas-Boas and the Hot Clube de Portugal, funded by the Portuguese Government through the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). He also served as a member of the coordination team of Encyclopedia of Music in Portugal on the Twentieth Century, to which he has contributed with 54 entries. His publications include two co-editorships (Musics and Knowledge in Transit and Current Issues in Music Research: Copyright, Power and Transnational Music Processes) and articles and refereed conference papers on Indian music, jazz, identity and Diaspora, Portuguese popular music, and copyright. His works results from archival research and fieldwork carried out in Portugal, England and India. He also studied double-bass at Lisbon Conservatorium and at the Hot Club of Portugal’s Jazz School and participated in multiple recordings related to different music styles.
