Biography

Jorge Castro Ribeiro had his PhD in Music (Ethnomusicology) at the University of Aveiro where he is Assistant Professor. He is also course director of the Master in Music and of the Master in Music Education and member of the Executive Committee of the Department of Communication and Art. Researcher in several projects funded by the FCT and other entities, he carries out scientific research on music and musical practices in mainland Portugal, Madeira, Cape Verde and Brazil from multidisciplinary approaches based on ethnomusicology, historical musicology, popular music studies and cultural studies. In these contexts he develops fieldwork and research in archives and documentation centers. His main domains of scientific interest are music in the lusophone space, Cape Verdean music, music in Portugal, migration, postcolonial studies, music and education, and music and dance as intangible cultural heritage. He has national and international publications, including books, articles, essays and ethnographic recordings and has presented academic papers in Portugal, Spain, France, United Kingdom, Germany, United States of America, Canada, Brazil, Mozambique and South Africa. Parallel to his academic research activity in music, for two decades he has been regularly developing public activity of musical dissemination in classical music concerts. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Casa da Música Foundation between 2013 and 2018.
