INET-md is leading Ethnomusicological Research into the Philharmonic Bands of Vimeiro
The philharmonic bands of the village of Vimeiro, in Arraiolos, will be the object of study in an ethnomusicological research project developed by INET-md. The project has a Scientific Committee led by the President Emeritus of INET-md, Professor Salwa El-Shawan Castelo-Branco, and made up of the Municipality of Arraiolos, Dr Ana Paula Amendoeira (Alentejo Regional Directorate for Culture) and researchers Maria do Rosário Pestana (INET-md | UA), Ana Margarida Cardoso (INET-md | NOVA FCSH | UA), André Granjo (INET-md | UA) and Paulo Lima (INET-md ).
The ethnomusicological research will run parallel to the historical survey and study of the Condes do Vimieiro Palace and its owners, the Faro e Sousa Family, which will be carried out by a team of historians hired for this purpose. The aim will be to transform this 18th century palace into a museum space, which will house the first philharmonic band research laboratory in Portugal.
As the project will be developed in a collaborative way, in agreement with representatives of local and regional institutions, cultural associations and members of the community, it will also include an Advisory Board. It includes the President of Arraiolos Municipality, Dr Sílvia Pinto, the President of the Vimieiro Parish Council, Dr Rui Estriga, the President of the Arraiolos Parish Council, Dr Helena Espadaneira, Dr Rui Lobo (local historian), a regional representative of Culture and representatives of the local philharmonic associations.
The public presentation of the project will be included in the "Arts in Rossio" initiative, which will take place between 29 September and 1 October in Vimieiro. The programme includes concerts by the Orquestra Sinfonietta de Lisboa (with conductor Vasco Pearce de Azevedo) (on the 29th) and Mário Laginha and Camané (on the 30th).
The project will be presented on the 1st, at 4pm, at the Interpretive Centre of the Rural World, with the participation of the two local philharmonic bands, the Sociedade Musical União Vimieirense and the Sociedade Filarmónica 1º de Abril Vimieirense.
