Music and the Body in Metal Music
 
The culture of metal music has developed characteristic bodily practices that at times serve to designate cultural membership as, for example, the term "headbangers" indicates. Some of these practices involve aspects of transgression that are of importance in metal, particularly in the so-called extreme metal subgenres. This presentation will focus on the musicking practices of singing and dancing in their relations to bodily aspects of transgression. It will address questions with regard to gendered bodies, relations between bodies and things as well as aspects of community in metal music alongside examples from empirical research whereby methodological aspects also come into play.

Florian Heesch is professor of popular music and gender studies at the University of Siegen. He holds a PhD in musicology from the University of Gothenburg. He is co-founder of the German-speaking heavy metal conference series "Hard Wired" and co-editor of a reader on music and gender and of an anthology on methodologies of heavy metal research. Besides aspects of heavy metal and of gender issues in popular music his research interests include multimedia transformations of literature and myths, Northern Europe, and 20th and 21st century music history.
 
Giordano Calvi took a master's degree in Musicology at the Dipartimento di Musicologia e Beni Culturali di Cremona, Università degli Studi di Pavia with a thesis about the connections between music, politics and the invention of identity among supporters of the Italian far right party Lega Nord supporters. He is currently PhD candidate in ethnomusicology at the Inet-MD research centre of the NOVA University of Lisbon under the guidance of his supervisor, Professor Maria de São José Côrte-Real. The main topic of his thesis is the expressive practice of black metal music in Lisbon and Portugal. Based on extensive ethnographic work, he is interested in describing the relationship between Portuguese black metal music production, the music, text and images expressive and symbolic aspects denoting a sense of local belonging, and the discourse of authenticity promoted by musicians and fans, interpreted from Walter Benjamin's concept of aura.
 
 
 
 
The Doctoral Seminar Music and Body: tradition and transgression through Ethnomusicology and Critical Thinking (M&Btt) is organised by Professor Maria de São José Côrte-Real and a group of advanced PhD students from INET-md in a cycle of conferences. M&Btt focuses on research in Music, Dance and Critical Thinking by invited researchers from abroad. The series initiates with Timothy Rice as the keynote speaker. The specific content varies depending on the collaborations of the invited researchers with the advanced PhD students. Cross-sectional learning is in the domain of preparation and argumentation of discussion of original works, participation in collective discussion processes, and acquisition of multidisciplinary perspectives. In an original methodology of collaborative oriented discussions. It develops in seven sessions on Tuesdays, (4-6p.m.) in Room B 201 (Av. Berna) weekly from October 19 to November 30, 2021.
