Biography
Sónia Alexandra Souto Barbosa (Porto, 1972) is currently in the second year of the Doctoral Programme in Artistic Creation at the University of Aveiro (UA). She is developing an artistic research project called "The Artist who inhabits the Non-Artist", which places theatrical creation at the base of the exploration of the awareness of the creative act and its materialisation in an artistic and performative object. Although her initial academic career was in economics, she was saved by theatre even before she graduated in this artistic field. She took a bachelor's degree in Theatre, Acting, at the Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo (ESMAE), already working as a professional actress, and completed it in 1997. Later (2003) she completed a degree in Theatre at the Escola Superior Artística do Porto (ESAP). In her artistic career, she was one of the founders of the theatre group 'Teatro Só', where she worked as an actress. During her exclusively artistic professional period, she worked with different directors. The encounter (and discovery) of theatre and education brought a new professional meaning; since 2001, she has developed her professional activity with this binomial as the basis of her practices, both as a teacher in polytechnic higher education, specifically at the School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto, and in primary and secondary schools, and as the artistic director of projects with various groups of non-artists. Theatre as an essential element in the integral development of the individual and the awareness of the creative act, as well as the importance of dramatic languages in education and initial teacher training, guide both theoretical and practical research work. In this sense, the recent integration into CIPEM as a guest researcher without a doctorate reinforces the deepening of the study in these areas.
