João Martins began his musical studies in 1993 at the Filarmónica Banda Vaguense. In 1995, he was admitted to the Conservatory of Music in Aveiro, completing, in 2004, the Supplementary Supplementary Course in Saxophone (8th Grade). In 2007, he entered the Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo do Porto (ESMAE), in the Jazz – Saxophone course, completing his degree in 2009. Integrated in the ESMAE Jazz Septet, he participated in the VI Jazz Festival at Teatro S .Luiz, winning the “Best Ensemble” award. In 2010 at the JOBRA Music Conservatory (Branca, Albergaria-a-Velha) he created the first professional jazz instrumentalist course at national level, where he assumed the functions of teacher and course director, until 2013. In 2017, he concluded his Master's Degree in Music Teaching at the University of Aveiro. In addition to his activity as a freelance jazz musician, he has collaborated as a musician and arranger in the field of contemporary Portuguese popular music with artists such as: Miguel Araújo, António Zambujo, Pedro Abrunhosa, Expensive Soul, Os Azeitonas, Dino d'Santiago, Marta Ren, Virgul, Tiago Nacarato, Os Quatro e Meia, Elisa Rodrigues, Virgem Suta, among others. In the pedagogical area, he currently teaches at the University of Aveiro — where he is responsible for coordinating activities related to Jazz — and the JOBRA Music Conservatory, regularly teaching various jazz/improvisation workshops all over the country. Currently, he is a doctoral candidate at the University of Aveiro, in the area of ​​composition, under the supervision of Jorge Castro Ribeiro and the co-supervision of Paulo Perfeito.
