Biography

Born in the Dominican Republic, Inês Thomas Almeida is a musicologist with a PhD in Historical Musical Sciences from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Her doctoral thesis O olhar alemão: as práticas musicais em Portugal no final do Antigo Regime segundo fontes alemãs (The German gaze: musical practices in Portugal at the end of the Ancien Régime according to German sources), under the supervision of Rui Vieira Nery, was unanimously awarded the highest classification. She is a researcher at the Institute for the Study of Literature and Tradition, in the RELIT-Rom project: The creative application of old romances (15th-18th centuries), with a post-doctoral research grant from FCT. In 2001 and 2002, she received a Merit Scholarship from the University of Évora, awarded to the best student on each course. She lived in Germany between 2003 and 2016, having graduated in Lyric Singing from the Hochchule für Musik und Theater Rostock. She subsequently set up an NGO to support the Portuguese community in Berlin. In this context, she was responsible for numerous cultural, social and humanitarian initiatives and received several awards and distinctions for her services to the community. She is a guest lecturer on the PhD programme in Gender Studies at Universidade Nova de Lisboa, where she teaches Music and Gender, and created the course Women Composers: History of Female Composition, which she teaches as a free course at FCSH NOVA. She is a member of the Austrian Society for 18th Century Research, for which she is developing the ÖGE18 Bücherkiste Update project, and of the AVEMUS project - Music in concertante style in the former Royal Monastery of São Bento da Avé-Maria in Porto (1764-1834), funded by FCT, which investigates the musical activity of these Benedictine nuns. Her research focuses on music in the 18th century, travel accounts, women in music and transnational cultural networks. She was deputy curator of the exhibition Madalena de Azeredo Perdigão (1923-1989): Vamos Correr Riscos, at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (2023), and co-author, with Rui Vieira Nery, of the book Vamos Correr Riscos: Textos escolhidos de Madalena de Azeredo Perdigão (Tinta-da-China, 2023). She has published articles in specialised scientific journals and maintains an intense activity as a lecturer, both at national and international conferences, and also for non-specialized audiences at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the São Carlos National Theatre.
