CALL FOR PAPERS | INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS JOSÉ AFONSO | 26 AND 27 OCTOBER 2024 | SETÚBAL

José Afonso is one of the greatest references of our contemporary culture, whose work is important to know and promote. His profound connection to the city of Setúbal, and vice versa, demands the spotlight that is being given to him in these celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April. In this regard, a congress dedicated to the discussion and dissemination of José Afonso's various activities (1929-1987) will be held, bringing together both experts dedicated to studying the various aspects of his work and collaborators and friends of the singer in testimonial sessions. In addition to the discussion concerning his musical practice, it is intended that this event addresses an extensive range of topics, including his civic engagement before, during, and after the revolutionary period of 1974-75, in the defense of freedom and democracy.

To attract different audiences interested in José Afonso's legacy, as well as friends and active participants in various aspects of his career, this congress foresees testimonial sessions organized thematically; conferences and presentation of papers, both by invitation and by proposals evaluated by a scientific committee.

Thus, it is intended that this event constitutes an unprecedented opportunity for a broad intersection of various knowledge about José Afonso's journey, seeking to intersect academic research with other fields dedicated to the preservation and dissemination of the singer's memory. The congress will also include other activities, such as exhibitions or musical sessions. It is also intended that the realization of this congress stimulates the location and collection of documentation and phonographic material related to José Afonso for subsequent preservation.
