Launch of the CD-Book "A História da Maria Frederica"

"The History of Maria Frederica" is a project that arose from the study of manuscripts by the composer Carlos Saraiva (1910-2001), developed by Ana Margarida Cardoso (member of INET-md) as part of her doctoral thesis. His compositions include marches, pieces for "revista" and various wind quintets, including "O Livro da Maria Frederica" (The Book of Maria Frederica), which came from three selections he made from the work of the same name by Frederico de Freitas (1902-1980) and which the Quinteto Nacional de Sopro premiered and performed at the Emissora Nacional studios between 1973 and 1974. The Quinteto de Sopros do Vale recorded two of his selections, totalling twenty-eight short pieces, in the order presented by Carlos Saraiva. From this music, the writer and narrator Rita Pinto created the story. Afterwards, a narrated concert was held for the students of the Banda Marcial do Vale, who, after listening to the story and music, drew the various characters, landscapes and other elements that served as the basis for the illustrations in the CD-book. This publication had the support of various organisations, such as INET-md from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, which helped make it a reality and enabled this music and this story to be read and heard by children and adults alike. There will be two launches, the first on 8 December at 4pm in the Auditorium of the Junta de Freguesia de Lourosa (in Santa Maria da Feira) and the second on 29 December at 6pm in the Salão Nobre of Colégio Almada Negreiros, Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

Quinteto de Sopros do Vale | Chamber music group dedicated to performing repertoire written by Portuguese composers from the second half of the 20th century. The group joined the PhD project developed by researcher Ana Margarida Cardoso, who studied the activity of the Quinteto Nacional de Sopro (a group belonging to the former Emissora Nacional) and its members, for whom various wind quintets were composed, such as those written by Carlos Saraiva, Joly Braga Santos or José dos Santos Pinto. In partnership, the Quintet and ethnomusicologist Ana Margarida Cardoso have created the projects "Discovering the History and Music of the Santa Maria da Feira Choruses" (2020), "Circum Navegação da Música Portuguesa do século. XX" (2021) and "O Quinteto trocado por miúdos" (2022). The group performed several concerts in various parts of the country, including Guarda, Vila do Conde, Covilhã, Aveiro and Santa Maria da Feira. In 2021, they played live for Rádio Antena 2 and in October 2022 they were part of the programme for the São Roque Music Season and the 45th edition of the Paços de Brandão International Music Festival - FIMUV. Their main aim is to share the music composed by Portuguese composers for wind quintet, not only in Portugal but also abroad. To this end, they published a CD entitled "Músicos Ocultos: ao Quinteto Nacional de Sopro" (2022, Editora Grafonola). They are currently developing the project "The Story of Maria Frederica", with the writer and narrator Rita Pinto.
