This dissertation examines the Spanish repertoire for E-flat clarinet, the smallest instrument in the clarinet family, in its role as a soloist. The aim was to contribute to its knowledge and dissemination since this role is not as developed as in the case of the B-flat clarinet.
To this end, a catalog comprising Spanish and international works for E-flat clarinet was compiled. Secondly, a representative corpus of Spanish music was analyzed to define its musical characteristics. Finally, taking into account the fact that clarinetists play the E-flat clarinet as a secondary instrument and that the E-flat and B-flat clarinets are morphologically and acoustically different, we propose technical solutions to difficulties found in the analyzed works. This is illustrated by employing representative sound examples.
The present research has revealed a large body of music, more extensive than it was initially thought, with more than 480 works, of which almost fifty are from Spain. These are varied in style and mostly of recent composition, but not overtly avant-garde. The numerous alternatives suggested to the E-flat clarinet technique (different from the usual B-flat clarinet) illustrate the dissimilarities between the two instruments, justifying the specific approach to the technique of the instrument analyzed in this research. Therefore, the objective is to contribute to consolidating the specific technique of the E-flat clarinet, which will hopefully lead to optimizing the interpretation of its repertoire.
