Developing the Artistic Voice in Guitar: An Ecological Approach to Creative Processes through Corporality
The present thesis document reports on a study regarding the potentialities of creative processes, arrangement, and composition in developing my artistic voice with the guitar. The exploratory work was conducted based on an ecological approach that prioritizes embodied knowledge and the musician's corporality in such processes. This investigation aims to elaborate new artistic creations for guitar developed from a set of strategies conceived from this approach. Methodologically, the study is delineated into two stages: Stage I - Creation and Stage II - Diffusion, each consisting of three phases: Planning, Action, and Reflection. As initial results, the research has systematised a Set of Creative Strategies, equally structured into three phases: Creative Conception, Creative Action, and Creative Reflection. These strategies informed and guided the development of new works for guitar, the main outcome of this study. The resulting artistic intervention comprises a trilogy of arrangements and an original suite in four movements, totalling seven pieces for solo guitar. The arrangements recontextualised on the guitar the songs: Manhã de Carnaval by Luiz Bonfá (1922-2001); Alfonsina y el Mar by Ariel Ramírez (1921-2020); and No Rancho Fundo by Ary Barroso (1903-1964). In turn, the composition Suite Candombera (José Santos, 2021) is inspired by the Afro-American culture of Uruguayan Candombe, comprising four movements: I - Llamada y Cortejo; II - Templar de los tambores; III - Renascer del Fuego; and IV - Canto Ancestral y Final. These artistic creations have been documented for sharing through two memory supports: audiovisual recordings of the works and musical score sheets. As future perspectives, this study aims to contribute to discussions on the relevance of adopting creative processes from an ecological perspective in the artistic education of musicians. Similarly, it aspires to prompt reflection on our responsibilities as musicians and artists, educators and researchers, especially concerning the critical and ethical roles we should assume in our societies as agents of transformation.
