Seminar | Music and Body: tradition & transgression in postcolonial and local epistemology

Not everyone sees the world from the same perspective. Each civilization with its own symbolic world. And through this semiotic environment, each one sees, knows and interprets the world. The problem is that, for a long time, differences were smothered under the hegemonic pressure of Euro-Western standards. It was thought, a priori, that the excellence of the biblical-Christian definition of marriage and family, for example, could be received, in fact, deduced from the thinking and acting of all men. This cultural chauvinism has silently kept invaluable wisdom treasures that we need to rescue today. Fortunately, the epistemological revolution of mental decolonization is creating more open and humble attitudes in the human and social sciences, which can certainly open the door to a plural cosmovision, allowing for dialogue and complementarity. And, as far as we are concerned, we believe that a different vision of marriage and the family can be worked out "from home". For this session, we chose the song V'ondjo v'ondjo as well as related pieces of popular literature. When, in standard Portuguese, we talk about marriage and family, are we passing the same concepts? Are we talking about the same institution? Is the use of the same lexeme sufficient for us to process the same thoughts?

Bonifácio Tchimboto, father of the Benguela Diocese, specializes in Biblical Theology and African Studies. Currently he pursues post-doctoral studies in African Studies at Tangaza University College, Nairobi, since 2015. He is founder and former director of the Instituto Superior Politécnico Jean Piaget de Benguela (2005-2017). He is director, founder and editor of the interdisciplinary research journal Facta Lux (since 2017). He is a member of the Executive Committee of BICAM (Biblical Centre for Africa and Madagascar). Since 2017 he is Researcher-coordinator of the NELiC (Núcleo de Estudos de Línguas e Culturas), of the CESP (Centro de Estudos e Pesquisa) of the ISP J Piaget of Benguela. Moisés Rafael, also father of the Benguela Diocese, specializes in religious music of Angola. He composed Il Precursore, Oratorio su San Giovanni Battista per soli, coro e orchestra, with which he earned his MA degree in Sacred Music Composition at the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music, in Rome. He is waiting defence date to finish his PhD with the thesis entitled Ohutu y'Olupandu em Kawanga: dança, catolicismo e cultura local em confronto na missa em Benguela, at NOVA FCSH, where he studies since 2015, supervised by Maria de São José Côrte-Real. He is the founder of Casa da Música de Benguela (CDM), a community music centre, located in Benguela (Angola), with the main objective of responding to the needs of music learning and research in Benguela. He is co-founder of QUINTAL, an Association of Social Promotion (APS) that aims to promote dialogue and cross-pollination between the arts and scientific research, with particular attention to the fields of Ethnomusicology and Anthropology, and according to a participatory methodology. Currently he develops his pastoral work in Genova since 2020, to accommodate his logistic needs as a PhD student.
The Doctoral Seminar Music and Body: tradition and transgression through Ethnomusicology and Critical Thinking (M&Btt) is organised by Professor Maria de São José Côrte-Real and a group of advanced PhD students from INET-md in a cycle of conferences. M&Btt focuses on research in Music, Dance and Critical Thinking by invited researchers from abroad. The series initiates with Timothy Rice as the keynote speaker. The specific content varies depending on the collaborations of the invited researchers with the advanced PhD students. Cross-sectional learning is in the domain of preparation and argumentation of discussion of original works, participation in collective discussion processes, and acquisition of multidisciplinary perspectives. In an original methodology of collaborative oriented discussions. It develops in seven sessions on Tuesdays, (4-6p.m.) in Room B 201 (Av. Berna) weekly from October 19 to November 30, 2021.
