This book presents an ethnomusicological study of cante ao baldão, one of the traditions of song duelling in Portugal. It probably emerged in the end of the 19th century in the Municipality of Odemira in southern Alentejo and flourished in the mid- 20th century, extending to several neighbouring municipalities (Ourique, Castro Verde and Almodover). Between the 1960s and 1980s, the practice of cante ao baldão diminished considerably due to emigration and other socio-economic factors. Based on an ethnography of the genre, this book analyzes the poetic and musical structures, performance settings and occasions as well as recent changes.
