This book deals with one of the cultural institutions supported by the totalitarian regime known as Estado Novo that ruled Portugal from 1933 up to 1974, namely the Campanhia Portuguesa de Ópera (Portuguese Opera Company), a professional group that was active from 1965 up to 1973. The Company attempted to popularize opera as a way of "cultivating the masses".
