Book | José Mário Branco: Entrevistas para a imprensa (1970-2019)
Ricardo Andrade and Hugo Castro, researchers at INET-md, coorganized with António Branco the book José Mário Branco: Entrevistas para a imprensa (1970-2019), recently published by Tinta-da-china.
Resulting from the work carried out by the José Mário Branco Research and Documentation Centre – Music and Freedom (CEDJMB-ML), the book brings together 119 press interviews, making accessible the remarkable self-reflective dimension of José Mário Branco over 49 of his more than 50 years of musical activity.
Organized chronologically (1970–2019), these conversations explore key themes in the journey of one of Portugal’s most prominent musicians and composers. They cover specifically musical topics—such as stylistic transformations in musical repertoires, the world of phonographic recording, and reflections on the social functions of song—as well as broader issues, including political activism, the successes and failures of various left-wing movements, obstacles faced throughout his career, and his ventures into other artistic fields, particularly theater and cinema.
This book is the result of an extensive collection of documentation on José Mário Branco (1942–2019), a project undertaken by Ricardo Andrade and Hugo Castro, researchers at INET-md and curators of the musician’s archive. This archive is housed at the José Mário Branco Research and Documentation Center – Music and Freedom (CEDJMB-ML) at NOVA FCSH. Their work has been carried out in collaboration with António Branco (University of Algarve), who is also a curator at CEDJMB-ML and José Mário Branco’s nephew. All three researchers are part of the EXIMUS project team.
