Caio Mourão, INET-md researcher now pursuing his PhD, is the author of the open access article "É, nesta Lisboa, figura de proa da nossa canção: visões das Fado Bicha através das televisões", published in the Proceedings of the IV Congress of  Associação Brasileira de Musicologia (ABMUS), where it was first presented online.

In this text, Caio addresses the transgressive aspect of the fado produced by the group Fado Bicha, by analyzing their music videos in comparison with typical fado video clips.

Abstract:

Based on Jody Berland's statement that it is impossible to gain notoriety with a song without a music video (Berland 1993, 26) and inspired by the methodology proposed by Carol Vernalis (2004), this communication's main objective is to reflect on the images brought in four music videos from the Portuguese LGBT Fado group Fado Bicha (FB): O Namorico do AndréCrónica do Maxo DiscretoEstourada and Lila Fadista. I compare these landscapes with those from the typical fado music video Bom dia, Amor, by fado singer Carminho. The questions are: What are the group's main stylistic references? According to the fact that fado is linked to traditional Lisbon's neighborhoods and the sea, which places would LGBT Fado be associated with? What are the landscapes illustrated in the music videos and described in the texts of these songs?

Keywords: Music video; LGBT Fado; Parody; A(r)tivism; Camp.
