Prize | Teresa Gentil awarded with Prémio Joaquim de Vasconcelos 2023
The 2023 edition of the Prémio Joaquim de Vasconcelos – the annual distinction awarded by SPIM to the best work presented by one or more students at each edition of the Music Research Meeting (EnIM) – was attributed to Teresa Gentil, INET-md's researcher pursuing her PhD in the School of Social Sciences and Humanities, at NOVA University Lisbon. Teresa was distinguised for her paper on "The voice of the 'Portuguese soul': Media representations of Amália Rodrigues's voice".
In an email release to its members, SPIM's board of directos points that the jury of the prize highlighted Teresa's "original interpretative proposal, focusing on the ways in which the voice of the fado singer Amália Rodrigues and the meanings associated with her to this day were configured through the discourses of the media, especially in the written press, between 1939 and 1945", discourses that were at the "genesis of Amália as a 'myth' and the idea of her voice as 'the Portuguese soul'". The jury also emphasised that the paper "makes a relevant scientific contribution to understanding the relationship between the voice, the mediated sound, and the construction of national social representations".
