Biography

Born in Vale de Cambra, João Vilar is a composer, producer and performer who works in both classical and popular music. He is attending the Doctoral Music (composition) program at the University of Aveiro. He holds a Master's in Composition from the School of Music and Performing Arts of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto. He also has a degree and a master's degree in Literature and Linguistics from the Faculty of Letters of the University of Porto.
His research work has been particularly applied to hybrid relations between classical and popular music, popular music studies and post-modernist music.
His artistic activity reveals a similar trail: his musical language and style are often positioned in a border space between the two musical traditions. His compositions include instrumental music for the most diverse formations - from soloist to orchestra - electronic and acousmatic music and music for different vocal formations. He also has extensive work in the field of popular music (not only as a composer but also as a producer and performer), both in the context of "band" and "solo".

Abstract
This artistic research project proposes a compositional practice centered on the incorporation of popular song in a Western art music context, presenting a hybridist approach that combines certain elements of the popular and Western art musical traditions. In this way, it aims to somehow tackle the fundamental issue of the apparent centuries-old disconnect between Western art music and the wider audience.
