Biography
He completed his Masters in Theory and Composition in 2013 at Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo (ESMAE) and graduated in International Journalism in 1998 at the Escola Superior de Jornalismo do Porto. He is a researcher at the Institute of Ethnomusicology (INET-md), in Aveiro. The use of the studio as a composition process using acoustic, analogue and digital instruments has been the basis of his artistic practice, privileging timbre and sound as musical material. The research he develops at INET-md, aims at the construction and mapping of a digital instrument of gestural control that uses gesture in the production of sound and whose objective is to enable the use of new materials in composition.In 2019, his interest in Timbre composition led him to the creation of the VIBRA, a project published in 2020 (supported by D.G. Artes and Criatório) and whose main objective was to combine the plasticity of the public spaces of the city of Porto and their inherent acoustics, in the composition of musical pieces. The project was recorded at Casa da Música do Porto, at the Marquês subway Station, at the Serralves Foundation and at the underground river, 'Rio de Vila'.His artistic collaborations cross several areas. As a composer, arranger and instrumentalist, he collaborates or has collaborated with Regina Guimarães, António Durães, Rui Reininho, Nuno Markl, Pedro da Silva Martins, João Reis, Ana Deus, Alexandre Soares, Dimitris Andrikopoulos, Igor C Silva, Sérgio Carolino, Frederic Cardoso, among others.Doctoral ProjectTitlePHYSICAL COMPUTING INSTRUMENT: A gestural controller for performance and composition
AdvisorCo-advisorAbstractThe use of the studio as a composition process using acoustic, analogue and digital instruments has been the basis of my artistic practice. This process promotes the interaction of the different elements that make up the studio in order to privilege composition through timbre and sound as musical material. This use of the studio as a musical instrument has suffered constraints, as a result of my need to use new materials in composition. This PhD project aims to answer this problem, through the construction and mapping of a digital instrument that uses gesture to produce sound. The Physical Computing Instrument will streamline my songwriting process, adding new material to the studio and manipulating current elements. The instrument will also contribute to the development of my artistic research through the composition of works for different formations that may also be useful for the growing community of musicians, composers and academics who develop research in this area
