Biography
RODRIGO AFFONSO, born in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and based in Frankfurt am Main (Germany) since 2008, holds a Masters Degree in Coral Conducting from the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt am Main and Performance Practice from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.He is currently pursuing a PhD in Music at the University of Aveiro and a Bachelor of Philosophy and Art History at the Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main.In 2018 he was the main juror of the International Choir Competition of Miltenberg (Germany) and in 2013 he was a member of the jury of the International Choir Competition of Daejeon (South Korea).In 2019 he received the award for best conductor in the Bernbach choir competition (Germany).With his female choir ElektraVokal won the 1st prize in the contemporary music category of the Büdingen Choir Competition (Germany), as well as the 1st prize in the women's choir and contemporary music categories at the Bernbach Choir Competition. At the Aveiro International Choir Festival 2019 (Portugal) the group won the 3. Grand Prix Award.He conducts choirs and orchestras, professional and amateur, regularly and since 2017 has held the position of Principal Conductor of the District Choir Association (Kreischorleiter) in Dieburg (Germany). As a guest conductor, he led groups including South Korean Daejeon Philharmonic Choir, French choir Arsys Bourgogne and renowned German choir Gänchinger Kantorei.Since 2006, he offers courses and workshops on conducting and choral singing in France, South Korea, Germany, Brazil, Spain and Portugal.He also worked as a professor of harmony and musical analysis at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and as a teacher of choral singing and musical perception at the Rio de Janeiro Baptist College of Music.Doctoral ProjectTitle
Strategy of a “Polyphonic Rehearsal”: Case study with the female choir ElektraVokal on Johannes Brahms' choral workAdvisorAbstractThe research project presented here belongs to the study of the choral rehearsal.
The main question that drives my research is how to rehearse so as to generate interpretations capable of articulating and integrating multiple layers of musical events that are commonly taken as excluding.
Building upon my practice as a musical director, I will observe, experiment and propose strategies for the interpretation of aspects present in the work of Johannes Brahms for female choir such as: rhythmic-harmonic ambiguities, text-music relation and the appropriation of ancient music. The group that will act as a laboratory for this research will be the German choir, based in Frankfurt am Main, ElektraVokal.
