Biography
Jean Michel Garetti studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris (France) where he obtained a Master's DFS in oboe and chamber music, before obtaining his PhD in Music/Performance at the University of Aveiro (Portugal). He began his orchestral career in 1989 a solo English horn at the Orchestre de l’ Opera de Saint -Etienne (France) where he stayed until 1996. That same year, he moved to Portugal and became a solo English horn at the Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa (OML) and a professor at the Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra (ANSO). During his stay in Lisbon, he developed an intense musical activity with more than 120 chamber music concerts and ten solo concerts accompanied by OML.
In 2002, he won the English horn solo position at the Orquestra Nacional do Porto, where he remained until 2015. During this period, he was invited to become the pedagogical director of the Conservatório de Música de Vila Real and appointed professor of oboe at the Escola Profissional da Jobra. In 2007, he was appointed as an oboe teacher at the Universidade de Aveiro, a position he still holds today.
His great interpretive flexibility led him to collaborate and record with several artists of different styles, namely Saiki Yumi and Mochizuki Misato (Contemporary Music), J.C Petit (Film music like Cyrano de Bergerac,Jean de Florette, Manon des sources), Antonio Vitorino de Almeida (Chamber Music), Bernardo Sassetti (Jazz- Unreal: Sidewalk Cartoon), singer Miguel Araujo (Chronicles of the Big City and Big City live at the Oporto Coliseum) and also, as an actor-musician, in the film by director Coline Serreau “la Belle Verte”. In recent years, he has favored transversal artistic creation, namely through cooperation with artists such as Joaquim Luxo (plastic arts), Filipe Morais (Actor/mime), and Fábio Rodrigues (Photographer).
Jean Michel Garetti is also a sophrologist and creator/director of the specialized website Oboe Sales.
