Biography

He studied at the Conservatory in Lisbon where he completed the violin course with the highest grade, having later got the Graduation degree at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa. As a fellow of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, he attended Abraham Jaffée's class in Berlin, Germany, where he remained for three years. He participated in master classes with Gerardo Ribeiro, Anatoly Bajenov, Pierre Amoyal, Ifrah Neaman, among others. He was a private student of Max Rabinowitsj. As a violinist he was 1st prize in the Young Musicians and Maurice Raskin competitions, and 2nd prize in the Estoril Interpretation Competition. He performed in concert throughout Europe. In duo with piano, he has given concerts at several Music Festivals, and has played several times at the invitation of the Gulbenkian Foundation Music Services. He has performed in duo with different pianists such as: Maria Emília Leite Velho, Nancy Lee Harper, João Miguel Crisóstomo, Eduardo Resende, Grigory Gritsiouk, João Bettencourt, Nuno Caçote, among others. He usually plays as a soloist with an orchestra, having already played with the Orquestra da RDP, Orquestra Colegium Musicum, Filarmonia das Beiras, Cascais and Oeiras Chamber Orchestra, among others, having collaborated with conductors such as Silva Pereira, Ernst Schell, Max Rabinowitsj, António Saiote, Cesário Costa, Vasco Pearce de Azevedo, António Vassalo Lourenço. In this context he has performed most of the most important concertos in the violin repertoire, from J.S.Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Max Bruch, Tchaikowsky, Sibelius, Brahms and others. He founded the Luís de Freitas Branco String Trio and the Aveiro String Quartet, formations with which he has given concerts in different parts of the country, and in which he pays particular attention to Portuguese music. He has been a concertmaster at the Filarmonia das Beiras since July 1998 at the invitation of the then titular Conductor Fernando Eldoro, having given more than 1200 concerts in these roles in Portugal, Spain and France. He is frequently invited to judge competitions and to give master classes. PhD in Music from the University of Aveiro in 2014, he is currently Guest Assistant Professor at the Department of Communication and Art at the University of Aveiro, where he teaches violin and directs the string orchestra class.
