News | Meno Del Picchia is the most recent visiting researcher at INET-md at NOVA FCSH
Paulo Menotti Del Picchia, known as Meno Del Picchia, started in April his one-year stay at the NOVA School of Social Sciences and Humanities, as a visiting researcher at INET-md, where he will be taking part in the activities of the RG Ethnomusicology and Popular Music Studies, under the supervision of Salwa El-Shawan Castelo-Branco. This stay has the support of a BEPE - Bolsa Estágio de Pesquisa no Exterior, from FAPESP (process 2024/16757-8).
Meno Del Picchia is an anthropologist, ethnomusicologist and musician. Awarded a PhD in Social Anthropology by the University of São Paulo, with a thesis based on a dense musical ethnography of São Paulo funk, Meno is now a lecturer and post-doctoral researcher affiliated with the music department of the Institute of Arts at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), where he is developing a project entitled ‘Beat pesado e corte chave - funk, trap e a construção de masculinidades’, approved by FAPESP (process 2023/10671-1), under the supervision of Professor Suzel Ana Reily.
Meno now seeks to internationalise his research into the creative practices of musicians and artists in the studio, reflecting on how anthropology and ethnomusicology can provide perspectives for analysing interactions between humans and non-humans in this studio environment, namely new production technologies. In Lisbon, the researcher will follow this type of process with Portuguese-African musicians from the Batida scene, an Afro-diasporic genre of Electronic Dance Music, whose genesis is closely linked to recent migratory processes between Portugal and Portuguese-speaking African countries.
