News | Lectures by INET-md researcher at the universities of Harvard, Yale, Brown, UMass Dartmouth and UMass Lowell
Inês Thomas Almeida, INET-md researcher with the research project FEMUS 18: Spaces and Profiles of Women Making Music in 18th Century Portugal (2023.09324.CEECIND) will give a lecture at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, Yale University, Brown University and Harvard University, at their invitation, respectively on March 25 and 26, and April 7 and 17, 2025.
The lecture presented at all these universities is entitled Invisible Legacies Throughout History: How Women Shaped Music in Portugal and Brazil, and focuses on the role of women in musical practices in Portugal and Brazil over the centuries. Presenting various examples (of both continuity and discontinuity) of a legacy that is often forgotten, diminished or made invisible, this lecture aims to promote a comprehensive approach to the musical heritage in these two countries — a heritage in which women, far from being passive observers, were also agents in the creation, preservation and transformation of music.
Additionally, on April 2, Inês Thomas Almeida will deliver a lecture at UMass Lowell, entitled More than Entertainment: Music as a Tool of Power and Politics in Portuguese History, in the historic Allen House pavilion.
Inês Thomas Almeida is currently FLAD/Saab Visiting Professor for Portuguese Studies at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, where she is teaching the seminar Lusophone Music and Culture until May 2025.
