On October 10th, a Seminar took place of the INET-md Research Group Education, Music, and Theatre in the Community (GIEMTC), in a hybrid format, at the School of Education of the Polytechnic of Porto, as well as online, via Zoom.

The seminar entitled “A Population-Level analysis of associations between school music participation and academic achievement”, was kindly offered and oriented by Prof. Peter Gouzouasis, professor in the Department of Curriculum & Pedagogy at The University of British Columbia, Canada.

This study, carried out by the researcher and his team, employed population-level educational records of thousands of students from four public schools in British Columbia, Canada, to examine relationships between music education in school and academic achievement in Mathematics, Science, and English. Findings suggested that multi-year engagement in music, especially instrumental music, may benefit high school academic achievement.

As has been usual in the last five years or so, students of the master’s in music education and the master’s in music teaching participated in this Seminar, as well as colleagues of the GIEMTC and other teachers and researchers.
