Call for papers | TransVariations_Music Beyond the Limits of Time and Technology International Colloquium
TransVariations is an EEA Grants funded research project, coordinated by INET-md researcher Alfonso Benetti, addressing innovative technological approaches to problematize artistic creation and interpretation issues in the context of music. Involving the University of Aveiro (UA/Portugal), the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU/Norway), and the Porto Polytechnic Institute (IPP/Portugal), the project aims to promote the creation/recreation of artistic works and the production of new artistic outputs through the use of contemporary languages based on experimentation with technological interfaces; to provide the testing and improvement of new technologies related to artistic creation according to their applicability, pertinence, and functionality; to reshape the idea of expressivity in music through the interaction between creative/performative actions and instrumental feedback; and to disseminate new resources, technological tools, and practical related strategies for artistic creation and interpretation in music.
In the context of the TransVariations project, the Institute of Ethnomusicology - Center for Studies in Music and Dance (INET-md) and the University of Aveiro (Portugal) will host the international colloquium TransVariations_Music Beyond the Limits of Time and Technology – taking place between September 25 (ceremony and opening performance) and 26 (presentation of selected submissions), 2024. In-person participation is preferred, but remote presentations can be accommodated in exceptional cases.
Submissions related to the project scope are strongly encouraged. Associated topics include - but are not limited to:
1. Contemporary approaches to music and musical performance
2. Creation and recreation of musical works
3. Radical interpretations and recreations of ‘classical’ works
3. Artistic experimentation and technological interfaces
4. Use of (new) technologies in association with artistic creation
5. AI and its impact on music creation and performance

Presentation formats include:
- Paper (up to 20 min. + 10 min. discussion)
- Conference-recital (up to 45 min. + 10 min. discussion)
- Recital (up to 30 min. + 10 min. discussion)
- Panel (up to 90 min.)
Important: the authors of the proposals selected for presentation will be responsible for providing/bringing the necessary material. However, authors must send a list containing the associated technical requirements, from which the colloquium organization will indicate the material already available at the institution to be used in each case.
Proposals accepted at the colloquium will be published in an e-book of abstracts. In addition, selected authors will be invited to submit their proposals in e-book chapter format to be included in the peer-reviewed publication TransVariations_Music Beyond the Limits of Time and Technology, edited by Alfonso Benetti (University of Aveiro/Portugal), Øyvind Brandtsegg and Trond Engum (Norges Teknisk-Naturvitenskapelige Universitet/Norway), and Francisco Monteiro (Polytechnic Institute of Porto).
