The composer and INET-md researcher António Chagas Rosa will premiere the film version of the chamber opera "O Homem dos Sonhos" on RTP2 on June 29th at 10:00 PM. Inspired by the short story of the same name by Mário de Sá-Carneiro, it was performed on stage in 2022 at Teatro São Luiz, produced by Ópera do Castelo
The filmed version of the opera "The Man of Dreams" originally premiered on stage at the São Luiz Theatre in 2022 is an adaptation of the short story of the same name by Mário de Sá-Carneiro. The music is composed by António Chagas Rosa, a faculty member in the Departamento de Comunicação e Arte da Universidade de Aveiro and a researcher at INET-md. António Chagas Rosa brings to fruition a long-standing project, presenting a profound and visionary reflection on the human condition both on stage and on screen.
António Chagas Rosa shares the behind-the-scenes of the creation of this work:
"Em fevereiro de 2022 foi estreada no palco do Teatro Municipal de São Luís, em Lisboa, a minha terceira ópera – 'O Homem dos Sonhos' – graças à confiança e aos esforços de Catarina Molder, cantora e diretora da Companhia Ópera do Castelo. A Catarina lançou a ideia em 2017 e no mesmo ano eu escrevi o rascunho. Peguei na novela 'O Homem dos Sonhos', de Mário de Sá-Carneiro, que foi publicada no livro de contos 'Céu em Fogo' em 1915, mas que tinha sido já iniciada e esboçada pelo menos em 1912. Eu conhecia a novela há mais de 20 anos, sendo que Mário de Sá-Carneiro para mim sempre representou a poesia bruta e o extravasamento último daquilo que é possível obter com a língua portuguesa. Fui vivendo com esse texto ao longo dos anos, permeabilizando-me às janelas de fantasia que cada sonho representa e acabei por mergulhar nesse mundo irreal em 2017, mesmo sem haver na altura nenhuma perspetiva concreta de uma produção em teatro. O tempo da composição foi um tempo de libertação, de viagem, de anulamento de convenções, de transe lírico, de delírio. O resultado final não foi fortuito: é uma obra pessoal. Com as palavras de Sá-Carneiro, eu fiz o mesmo que às de Oscar Wilde em 'De Profundis': na minha missa profana 'A Wilde Mass' (2014), organizando as passagens referentes à visão de Jesus-poeta de modo a criar um texto poético e cantável, com frases curtas e sonoras."
Divided into seven scenes, "O Homem dos sonhos" explores the delicate balance between madness and sanity, dream and reality. The opera synthesizes the eternal human dissatisfaction and the continuous obsession with transcending the limits of time, space, and gender. The narrative emphasizes the premonitory and structuring role of dreams, showing how they shape and guide human existence, both individually and collectively. "This work invites the audience to embark on an introspective journey, questioning the boundaries of the conscious and the unconscious, and reflecting on how our dreams influence and transform our reality," says António Chagas Rosa.
