Gathering | "How many are we": INET-md celebrates the Carnation Revolution
In the context of the celebration of the Carnation Revolution, INET-md organizes the official launch of the Thematic Line Power, Politics and Activism on June 8th 2024.
“Andamos a ver se vemos O caminho a percorrer
Entre o Abril que fizemos
E o que está por fazer”
|
“We’re going to see if we can find The way to go Between the April we made And what needs to be done” |
Thus begins the song “Quantos é que nós somos” (“How many are we”) by José Mário Branco, published for the first time in 1987 on the album “Festa de Abril”. Words that, today, sound even more current, as April celebrates 50 years and social and political challenges accumulate, one on top of the other, in an incessant and worrying way.
Thinking about what “is yet to be done”, from the perspective of music and dance research, means reflecting on themes such as protest or intervention songs, the activity of artists in a context of exile or political asylum, the role of collectives and associations as places of resistance, participatory arts as an instrument for building citizenship, among others. Themes that are at the heart of the concerns of many researchers at the Institute of Ethnomusicology – Centre for Studies in Music and Dance, and for its recently created thematic line Power, Politics and Activism. It will constitute the focus of the three round tables proposed in this meeting.
“O caminho a percorrer só o fazemos a andar
Mas p’ra ninguém se perder
Temos mesmo que saber
Quem nos vai a acompanhar”
|
“The path to be followed is only done by walking But so no one gets lost We must know Who will accompany us?” |
This will be a meeting on the border between academic symposium, public debate, collective lunch: one of “April’s festivities”, which will certainly make us “feel that we are not alone”!

During the April 1974 revolution, some recreational communities in the Lisbon region played an important role in resistance and political awareness, particularly through musical activity. Based on some ethnographic and historical studies about these places and people, we will ask: What is the evolution of these spaces of association? What is your resilience in the face of the challenges posed by the current social and political situation? Through what forms, strategies, harmonies and rhythms can we defend them?
