EUROVISIONS | INTERNACIONAL CONFERENCE | 7-8 May 2024, Malmö, Sweden

Music, Identity and Migration

This year, the EUROVISIONS conference will take place in the week of the semi-finals of the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC): on May 7 th , 09:00-14:00 (CEST), in the Niagara building of the Faculty of Culture and Society at Malmö University and on Wednesday May 8 th , 09:00–13:00 (CEST), at Media Evolution City in Malmö. It will once again embrace a hybrid format, welcoming participants both onsite in Malmö and online through our YouTube and social media channels.

Fifty years ago, an emerging Swedish pop group clinched the Eurovision Song Contest title with "Waterloo," marking the start of a remarkable journey that propelled both ABBA and the Swedish music industry onto the global stage - an example of how music can become a defining element for national cultural identity, while being at the same time a successful creative product for export.

The seventh EUROVISIONS conference will explore the complex relationships between music, identity, and migration. In light of recent and ongoing geopolitical strife throughout Europe, and within our host nation Sweden, we invite Eurovision scholars and fans alike to think through the impacts of demographic changes on conceptions of national identity and belonging, as well as what it means to foster diversity and equity in multicultural spaces. The city of Malmö exemplifies the vibrant interplay of diverse cultures and musical traditions, offering a rich space in which to situate Eurovision within contemporary migration and mobility trends.

Alongside our established Science Slam for early career researchers, and our dynamic round table discussions featuring an interdisciplinary range of scholars, industry practitioners, and enthusiasts, we are collaborating on a conference seminar organized by Malmö University together with Linnaeus University. Additionally, a special documentary screening on the Portuguese Festival da Canção in partnership with the public broadcaster RTP will be shown.

This year’s conference is a collaborative effort involving scholars from Germany, Portugal, the UK, the Netherlands, the USA, and Sweden and builds on the rich legacy of previous meetings in cities like Lisbon, Tel Aviv, Rotterdam, Turin, and Liverpool. Please join us on Tuesday May 7 th 2024 between 09:00-14:00 in the Niagara building of the Faculty of Culture and Society at Malmö University and on Wednesday May 8 th 2024 between 09:00-14:00 at Media Evolution City in Malmö.
