Transforming school music education through music teacher training at the High Schools of Education
Abstract
This project aims to investigate school music education practices and to understand how the innovative model of music teacher training implemented at the Schools of Education (SE) has contributed to develop music teachers and transform school music education. Thirty years after this milestone in teacher education, this study is pertinent regarding the new challenges of music education in contemporary societies, the value of music in human life, the benefits of musical learning to develop cognitive and social skills and the central role of music education in schools and communities. The research methodologies of documental analysis, questionnaire, interview and observation will analyse Music Education courses and graduates from two SE in different regions, Porto and Setúbal, and their practices. The results will contribute to adjust initial and continuing teacher education to current needs and increase the quality of teachers and music education, which will benefit schools and society.
