Remains is the name of an artistic project that, through musical creation and performance, interrogates the threat posed by waste and excessive consumption to the sustainability of both people and the planet. The project gives rise to a series of six concerts presented by the Borealis Ensemble and involves members of the Institute of Ethnomusicology – Centre for the Study of Music and Dance (INET-md), faculty from the Universidade de Aveiro (UA), and collaborating artists. The performances will take place between May and June 2025, in both Portugal and Spain.

The artistic project Despojos explores, through musical creation and performance, the dangers that waste and excessive consumption represent for the sustainability of human and environmental systems. It aims to investigate how art can be used to raise awareness of this issue, serving as both a metaphor and a strategic approach to the problem. Among the creative strategies employed by the project team are the use of unfinished or repurposed musical materials and discarded or recycled objects. The project was awarded funding through the Artistic Creation Support Programme of the Directorate-General for the Arts and is supported by both the UA and INET-md.

For this project, the Borealis Ensemble is composed of António Carrilho (recorders), Catherine Strynckx (cello), and Helena Marinho (piano), a researcher at INET-md and faculty member at the Departamento de Comunicação e Arte (DeCA), Universidade de Aveiro. Marinho invited composers Ângela da Ponte, Francisco Ribeiro (a master’s student at DeCA), Jaime Reis, Jônatas Manzolli, Olívia Silva, and Sara Carvalho (DeCA faculty member and INET-md researcher) to contribute to the project.
The concert series begins in mid-May and will tour several cities in Portugal and Spain. One of the performances will take place at the Universidade de Aveiro on June 5th, at 18h00, in the Auditorium of the Departamento de Comunicação e Arte (DeCA).
