From Archive to Stage: A contemporary ethnography of early music in Portugal

Altea Guevara | Universitat Politècnica de València

This seminar offers a reflection on the state of development of the historically informed musical performance sector in Portugal and the socio-professional realities of those who comprise it, with special attention to contemporary practices related to Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque music. By connecting artistic heritage with emerging practices, it presents a critical view of the current ways of preserving, transforming, and projecting this field into the future. During the presentation, partial results related to European contexts will be shared, allowing the Portuguese case to be situated within a broader comparative framework and highlighting common trends in facing the professional, institutional, and cultural challenges of the sector. The research aims to understand how musicians and cultural agents position themselves and address key issues such as the sustainability of their projects and career paths, labor market integration, heritage transmission, and relationships with institutions in a constantly changing environment. To this end, fieldwork is being conducted based on the observation of active artistic projects and interviews with relevant figures in the early music scene in Portugal. It also aims to document the professional network currently operating in the country, identifying synergies, structural weaknesses, and development opportunities. All of this is part of the doctoral thesis currently underway by the speaker, who in this presentation will share the current state of the work as well as plans for future actions aligned with the objectives of innovation and cooperation in the field of musical heritage and its sustainable contemporary projection.
