PERMANENT SEMINAR ON DANCE STUDIES

The Permanent Seminars of the INET-md Dance Studies Research Group (GIED) are intended to be a forum where all its members (integrated and collaborators), as well as other researchers from the academic, cultural and artistic world, can present their work and discuss ongoing projects and research. The enormous challenges that await us are like a compliment to the insistence and persistence (some would say resilience) that any scientific research represents, with greater evidence in artistic areas, and one of the simple but representative reasons why the Permanent Seminars organized by the Dance Studies Research Group have salmon as their chromatic option, illustrating a continuum against the current, always moving forward in a resilient dynamic of strength and will.

Dances with Tradition: The Importance of Traditional Repertoire in Socio-Cultural and Ethno-Artistic Contexts

Filipa Francisco | Choreographer, dancer, and artistic director of Mundo em Reboliço
Lucília Bahleixo | Choreographer, dancer, and director of Ai! a Dança
Marta Guerreiro | Cultural producer/programmer and dance facilitator at Associação PédeXumbo
Patrícia Esteves | Choreographer and teacher at Hope Dance and FMH – ULisboa
Susana Nunez | Choreographer and teacher at the National Conservatory Dance School and Estúdio de Dança de Carnaxide, Ideias do Século Association

In this seminar, we propose a reflection on the role of tradition in preserving historical memory, valuing cultural heritage, and fostering intercultural dialogue. We also highlight the relevance of traditional repertoire as both an educational and artistic resource — capable of promoting inclusion, strengthening community ties, and enriching creative and pedagogical processes.

We aim to explore how traditional practices can be integrated into educational and ethno-artistic frameworks, encouraging a sense of belonging, respect for cultural diversity, and intergenerational dialogue — in a dynamic interplay between culture, memory, and social transformation.

At a time marked by identity challenges and social fragmentation, recovering and reimagining traditional knowledge becomes a form of resistance and cultural affirmation, while also serving as a powerful site for artistic creation, innovation, and social cohesion.

Moderated by Margarida Moura | INET-md / FMH – ULisboa

Organized by Margarida Moura, Maria João Alves, Rita Rato, and Patrícia Esteves | INET-md / FMH–ULisboa
