Percussion music by Louis Franz Aguirre: a cathartic and singular blend of wisdom, mysticism, and excess

Joan Soriano Morales | Percussionist and teacher at the Professional Conservatory of Carcaixent

After more than a decade of collaboration with the Cuban composer based in Denmark, Louis Franz Aguirre, Spanish percussionist Joan Soriano presents a panoramic journey through the composer’s vast catalogue, which comprises around 80 works written over the past 25 years.
This repertoire, centred on percussion — both as a solo instrument and in dialogue with other ensembles — is explored from multiple perspectives: from the genesis and inspiration of the works to their aesthetics, performance, and organology. In this singular retrospective, Soriano places particular focus on the complete corpus of percussion sextets, on Aguirre’s most recent works featured in various recordings, and on ongoing creations developed in close collaboration with the composer himself, the ensemble Projecte SoXXI, and the presentation of Toque a Elegguá y Oshún.
