The Guitar in Jorge Peixinho's Music

Abstract

Jorge Peixinho (1940-1995) was a Portuguese composer who played a pivotal role in the second half of the twentieth century, at the forefront of the Portuguese avant-garde musical movement. This study focuses on his guitar music. A set of 21 guitar works composed by Peixinho over 24 years, between 1971 and 1994, has been identified. By consulting available sources on Peixinho and conducting interviews with people who had contact with the composer, data on aesthetics and contemporary practices were collected, particularly within the Lisbon Contemporary Music Group. Through the collection of Peixinho's manuscripts, followed by analysis and hands-on guitar research, characteristics of his writing for this instrument were identified and new performance proposals were developed.
