中国民乐与乐器:里斯本第八届研讨会
Expanding Horizons: Embracing the Wide Variety of Asian Music and Dance

7-10 Mary 2025

The eighth edition of the Lisbon Conference: Music and Chinese Musical Instruments, will take place on 7-10 May 2025, will be organized by the Institute of Ethnomusicology - Centre for Music and Dance Studies (INET-md) of the NOVA University Lisbon, by the European Foundation for Chinese Music Research (CHIME), by the Municipality of Mafra, and by the Confucius Institutes from the universities of Aveiro and Minho.

Launched in 2016, the Lisbon Conference has as its main objectives to raise awareness and encourage the academic world about the importance of the systemic study of music in China and, as well, to offer the public the possibility of interacting with Chinese music and its instrumentals.

One of the innovations of this eighth edition focuses on opening up to the music, dance and performance in other Asian countries, thus enabling researchers who have dedicated themselves to studying these practices in various Asian countries to share knowledge, expanding horizons for new possibilities and foster innovation in the field of research.

The conference will feature the participation of renowned ethnomusicologists, musicologists, musicians and other academics, from various countries, with guest researchers Professors Xiao Mei, from the Shanghai Conservatory, China; Jonathan Stock from the University College Cork, Ireland; Nicolas Prévôt from the Université Paris Nanterre, France, and Frank Kouwenhoven from the European Foundation for Chinese Music Research (CHIME), based in Leiden, Netherlands.

Alongside of the scientific presentations, there will also be a series of concerts and recitals that will take place at the facilities of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the Nova University Lisbon (NOVA FCSH), and at the Mafra National Palace.

This initiative's main sponsor is the Jorge Álvares Foundation which, since its first edition, which took place in 2016, has recognized the importance of promoting sound art from China among academics and researchers in Portugal. Scientific support has been guaranteed by CHIME - European Foundation for Chinese Music Research, based in Leiden, Netherlands, since its first edition.
