As part of the Permanent Seminar of the Creation, Performance, and Artistic Research Group at INET-md, renowned Canadian composer Barry Truax, a leading figure in electroacoustic music and soundscape composition, will conduct the workshop "Soundscape Composition as Context-Based Creation"Held from January 08th to April 02th, 2025, the event will be conducted remotely by Truax, while participants will gather in person at the CIME room (Electroacoustic Music Research Center) in the Departamento de Comunicação e Arte da Universidade de Aveiro (DeCA, UA).

With weekly sessions on Wednesdays from 6:30pm to 9pm, the workshop will cover historical and contemporary examples of this approach, encouraging in-depth reflection on its definition, implications, potential, and most innovative emerging practices. Although Barry Truax is teaching the workshop remotely, participants will meet in person at CIME, where they can work with the octophonic system.

With a total duration of three months, the workshop promises to provide a unique experience for musicians, composers, and researchers.
 
Registration is now open and can be completed via an online form. Participation is limited to the capacity of the CIME room, and selected applicants will be notified by email.

Barry Truax | A Canadian composer specializing in real-time implementations of granular synthesis, often using sampled sounds and soundscapes. He is widely recognized for developing the first real-time implementation of granular synthesis in 1986, for being the first composer to explore the spectrum between synchronous and asynchronous granular synthesis in Riverrun (1986), and for pioneering the use of samples as a source for granular composition, as in Wings of Nike (1987). Truax is Professor Emeritus at Simon Fraser University, where he taught electroacoustic music and acoustic communication. He was also one of the founding members of the World Soundscape Project.
