The Berlin and Vienna Phonogram Archives: Changing Approaches and Perspectives

Kendra Stepputat and Mariken Egger | University of Music and Performing Arts Graz

The Berlin Phonogram Archive and the Vienna Phonogram Archive were founded around the turn of the 19th to 20th century to collect and safeguard musics from all over the world. Now, more than a century later, both the discipline of comparative musicology, now morphed into ethnomusicology, and the phonogram archives as institutions have changed drastically in their approaches and aims. In this talk we will give an overview of the historical development of both archives and trace the changes in their approaches into the 21st century.
