Jez Riley French | Musician and artist (United Kingdom)
Jez Riley French's work over several decades explores the roles of perception and imposition through listening to sounds often outside our attention, revealing environments and architectures in wider contexts or microscopic details. Her motivation is listening to itself, the technological traces that can balance their materiality and the need to lessen the weight of the faulty boundaries we build around the place.
As part of SEMPER, the Permanent Seminar of the GI Creation, Performance, and Artistic Research, Jez Riley French will present the communication "Sound: choreographies of perception". The contents and strategies that Jez will develop in the practical workshop that will take place in Aveiro on the act and art of listening based on the exploration of localized sound through field recording practices (conventional and extended) will also be discussed. This activity is organized in partnership with VIC Aveiro Arts House.
Jez Riley French | With over 20 years of experience, Jez Riley French's work covers micro-listening, durational listening, and acoustic capture in architectural, plant, aquatic, and infrasound contexts, which he sees as fundamental elements of his contemporary art practices. Having exhibited her work in numerous internationally renowned institutions, such as the Tate Modern or the Museo Reina Sofia, Jez has collaborated with a wide selection of artists, musicians, and filmmakers, including Chris Watson, with whom she has developed a series of workshops and initiatives in the field of intentional listening and field recordings.
