4th Lisbon Conference: Chinese Music and Musical Instruments

In this fourth edition of the conference, dedicated to Chinese musical instruments with fretted strings, huqin (胡琴), diversified topics related to Chinese music and musical instruments in the context of ethnomusicology and historical musicology will be addressed. A series of papers related to Chinese music in Macau will also be presented, considering the importance of marking some significant dates, namely the 40th anniversary of the resumption of diplomatic relations with China, the 20th anniversary of Macau's transition of sovereignty and the 20th anniversary of the Macau Scientific and Cultural Centre.
The conference is open to all interested participants with prior registration, and features the participation of internationally renowned ethnomusicologists and musicologists such as Helen Rees (UCLA, United States); François Picard (Sorbonne University, France); Frank Kouwenhoven; (CHIME, Leiden University, Netherlands); Leung Hio Ming (Macao Polytechnic Institute), Catherine Capdeville, Département d'Études chinoises, INALCO and, with the participation of Portuguese researchers and musicians, such as Shao Xiao Ling, Pedro Roxo, José Eduardo, Ana Ferreira, Li Cheong, Adriano Jordão, João Pereira Bastos, Enio de Souza, among others.
In parallel to the conference, a concert will be held with a group of the Macau Chinese Cheong Hong Orchestra and a performance by Sylvie Chen (voice) and Miguel Leiria (double bass). There will also be an exhibition of calligraphy and Luo Qi.
The conference, concert and exhibition will be held at the Macau Scientific and Cultural Centre, Rua da Junqueira, 30, Lisbon.
The Chinese Music and Musical Instruments: 4th Lisbon conference is jointly organized by the Centro Científico e Cultural de Macau; the Institute of Ethnomusicology, m-d/FCSH/Universidade Nova de Lisboa; the Confucius Institutes of the University of Lisbon, Minho and Aveiro; the Institute of Traditional Medicine; with the support of Empresa Ibéria Universal, Lda. and the National Museum of Music.
