6th Lisbon Conference: Chinese Music and Musical Instruments

The Centro Científico e Cultural de Macau in Lisbon (CCCM) and the European Foundation for Chinese Music Research (CHIME), based in Leiden, the Netherlands, together with other Portuguese public and private institutions, will organize the 24th International CHIME Lisbon Conference from 9 to 13 May this year. The conference will take place together with the sixth edition of Lisbon Music: Chinese Music and Musical Instruments.


This edition will have the participation of 63 renowned researchers in the field of ethnomusicology and historical musicology from 16 countries who will address in their papers topics related to Chinese Music and Musical Instruments in Museum Collections; Musical Explorations; Historical Explorations; Modern Composition; Pipa: History and Performance; Frictional Strings in Chinese Opera; Traditional Chinese Music Instruments; Music of Ethnic Minorities: Towards an Instrumental Historiography; among others.

In addition to the academic papers, concerts and recitals on Chinese, Macanese and Indonesian music will be presented.

This conference seeks to raise awareness in the academic community for the systemic study of sound art in China and its instruments, as well as the dissemination of Chinese music and musical instruments to the general public.
This initiative has as its main sponsor the Jorge Álvares Foundation, which, since the first conference, held in May 2016, has been supporting the study and dissemination of music from China in Portugal.
